Transparency, Sustainability and Community Engagement: Etsy’s Sustainability Journey and the Future of Production

Devon Leahy, Director Of Sustainability And Social Innovation, Etsy

A new model for sustainable production is at the center of Etsy’s business – one that prioritizes craftsmanship over quantity and uniqueness over standardization, with humanity at the center of every action the brand takes. Over the past two years, Etsy has applied this model to the design and construction of its new global headquarters in Brooklyn, NY. With the aim of achieving the Living Building Challenge’s Petal Certification for the project, Etsy has advocated for transparency and material health disclosure while working hand in hand with small-scale, local manufacturers and makers. The result: a phenomenal new home for the handmade marketplace that represents a commitment to transparency, sustainability and social impact at a truly unprecedented scale.
