BASF receives six awards from the American Chemistry Council for Energy Efficiency

BASF receives six awards from the American Chemistry Council for Energy Efficiency FLORHAM PARK, NJ, May 24, 2012 -- BASF has received six awards from the American Chemistry Council (ACC) for success in implementing innovative, energy-saving improvements in corporate energy management and manufacturing operations. The awards are in recognition of significant energy management processes enhancements made at BASF manufacturing sites in 2011. BASF is focused on sustainable improvement through a global target to increase energy efficiency by 35 percent and reduce specific greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by year 2020, compared with 2002. A total of 75 projects were implemented at 25 different production sites using methodologies that include process modifications, motor and transformer efficiency increases, and advanced process controls. Ty Geiger, Corporate Energy Manager for BASF in North America, attributes the awards to the expertise and dedication of employees who worked on the winning projects. “Thanks to the efforts of all teams at multiple sites within BASF’s Manufacturing Community, we are delivering continuous improvements in our energy efficiency and reduction of greenhouse gases,” said Geiger. BASF received awards for projects in the following categories: Energy Efficiency Program – Corporate/Business Unit • BASF Corporation, for Corporate Energy Management Process. Significant Improvement in Manufacturing – Operating Unit • BASF’s Geismar, Louisiana site, for .Ethylene Oxide.) Plant Vent Gas Study. • BASF’s Jackson, Mississippi site, for Flash Dryer Heat Recovery. • BASF’s McIntosh, Alabama, site, for Production Schedule Optimization. Significant Improvement in Manufacturing – Plant Site • BASF’s Geismar, Louisiana Methylene Diisocyanate (MDI) plant, for Steam Pressure Optimization. • BASF’s Port Arthur, Texas site, for Fuel System Optimization. As an example of the savings achieved, BASF’s Jackson, Mississippi, site undertook an energy efficiency initiative focused on a flash dryer unit that resulted in a 2.3 percent reduction in energy consumption. "The BASF Jackson location is honored to have received ACC recognition,” said Chris Champagne, Continuous Improvement Leader for BASF in North America. “It is a testament to the dedication of our people and recognition that energy savings through heat recovery are important not only for cost savings, but also for the sustainability of our energy resources.” Winners were announced at the 2012 Responsible Care Conference and Expo, held April 29-May 1, 2012 in Hollywood, Florida. For 2011, BASF was one of five companies to earn an award with exceptional merit in the Energy Efficiency Program category. BASF has received at least one energy award from the ACC each year since 1996. BASF has focused on sustainable development for the past decade. The ACC‘s Responsible Care® Initiative’s Awards Program was developed more than a decade ago to recognize companies that exemplified leadership and outstanding performance based on the implementation and execution of the Responsible Care program. The ACC Energy Efficiency Awards was adopted under the Responsible Care Initiatives Awards Program in 1993 to support improving energy efficiency in the business of chemistry.
