Employees recycle five bins full of electronic items, thousands of soft drink cans, hundreds of newspapers and tons of white paper

MCINTOSH, AL, April 29, 2015 – In a year marking BASF's 150th anniversary, the BASF McIntosh team took their sustainability and Earth Day activities a step further. Nearly 500 employees and resident contractors joined together to collect recyclable items to support local nonprofit organizations.
"Our employees wanted their efforts to positively impact local nonprofit agencies. We take pride in our recycling activities and making a difference in our community," said George Vann, Vice President of the BASF site in McIntosh, Alabama.
The employees collected enough computers, laptops, keyboards, ink and toner cartridges, cables, old computer servers, printers and fax machines to fill up a commercial truck. The electronic items will provide employment opportunities for adults with cerebral palsy who help with the electronic recycling effort. Thousands of soft drink cans were collected to support a local boy scout's troop. Hundreds of newspapers were gathered to help adults with disabilities purchase gifts during the holiday season. The site shreds approximately 20,000 pounds of white paper every year. Shred-It, a paper shredding company, distributes the paper to local recycling agencies.
"It is an honor to receive such gracious support from BASF employees," said Glenn Harger, President and Chief Executive Officer of United Cerebral Palsy of Mobile. "Their involvement and support will allow UCP to grow its electronics and toner recycling program. The number of recycled goods collected provides more employment opportunities for adults with disabilities whose job is to help with our recycling efforts."
"The participants of Boy Scouts Troop 223 truly appreciate the continued support of BASF," said Jonathan Lang, Unit Commissioner. "The funds from the recycled soft drink cans are used to buy equipment such as camp stoves, backpacks, tents, sleeping bags and other essential items for summer camp. Donations like the one from BASF provide camp supplies for scouts and families who simply cannot afford to purchase the items themselves."
"BASF is a generous supporter of the Educational Center for Independence (ECI)," said Denise Taylor, Executive Director of the Educational Center for Independence. "The annual contribution allows us to coordinate special travel arrangements and make improvements to our classrooms. The individuals we serve use the proceeds from the recycled newspapers to purchase gifts during the holiday season. BASF's partnership has a great impact on the individuals that participate in this special program."
