Celebrating National Volunteer Week by contributing to a Better Future

This week around the globe people are getting involved in activities to improve their communities, their country and even their world. As I prepare to once again engage in my volunteerism activities, I’m reminded that we are one global community and that if we assist one another to improve our situations, it contributes to a better future for all of us.

Through my volunteering, I have witnessed the best of what human beings can be, in the way of creativity, innovation, courage, endurance and perseverance. I have found that as long as there is hope, there is always a way forward. Furthermore, volunteering has made me a better human being and helped me see other points of views. I learn as much from the people I volunteer with as they learn from me, so it is always a win-win situation.

One of my personal passions is to empower women leaders around the world. I am one of the founding members of an organization called Feminenza, which started several years ago and now spans across 18 countries in Europe, Asia Pacific, North America and Africa. One example of our impact comes from our Kenya outreach program. We helped create a training program for women leaders in Kenya to respond to the violence after the country’s 2007 elections. In February, I travelled to Kenya and saw firsthand how our program made a lasting impact in the communities served by the 21 talented women leaders.

I have also been honored to participate in several programs through AT&T such as the EMEA Women’s Network – launched in June 2013 by a team of dedicated women – which focuses on the development of women employees in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and AT&T Aspire, which helps students prepare for careers. I’m thankful to work for a company that promotes such important, impactful programs.

As each of you celebrate National Volunteer Week this week, remember that volunteering is a way we can all make our world a better place.
