In 2013, United Airlines executed a definitive purchase agreement with AltAir Fuels for cost-competitive, sustainable, advanced biofuels at commercial scale, representing a historic milestone for aviation. With United's strategic partnership, AltAir Fuels retrofitted part of an existing petroleum refinery to become a 30 million gallon, advanced biofuel refinery near Los Angeles, California.
On March 2, the United LAX Biofuel Initiative scooped the award for excellence in advanced biofuels at the World Bio Markets (WBM) Bio Business Awards in Amsterdam. The awards themselves honored the leading innovators in the bio-economy and hosted some of the most influential players from around the world in one magnificent venue.
When accepting the award, Mihir Thakkar, United's Director of Environmental Strategy & Sustainability, stated: “United, along with our partners AltAir Fuels, Honeywell UOP, World Fuel Services and Los Angeles World Airports, are honored to accept the award for excellence in advanced biofuels. United’s agreement with Alt-air is a first for the airline industry and we’re excited to introduce this renewable aviation biofuel on select flights from Los Angeles Airport this year.”
