Supporting the communities where we do business is an important part of Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group’s values and commitment to being a responsible business. This commitment extends to our Carlson Rezidor Annual Business Conference host community.
“Last year, we had an incredible event building a school library in the Bahamas that was exceptionally rewarding for the children and their school, and for us as individuals,” said Brenda Schultz, director, Responsible Business, Americas. “Our contribution made a significant impact in that community and we wanted to do the same this year.”
While attending the Americas Business Conference 2016 in Las Vegas, Carlson Rezidor leaders came together for a Responsible Business activity at C.H. Decker Elementary School, which serves an at-risk student population of 734 pre-school through fifth grade students; 75 percent of the students are eligible for free reduced lunch program, and English is a second language for 38 percent of the students.
Thirty-one Carlson Rezidor leaders spent the morning transforming the school’s current garden area (consisting of 6 garden boxes and one herb trellis) into a comprehensive outdoor learning lab, complete with seating, a whiteboard, a bulletin board, murals, a compost bin, a farmer’s table and fruit trees.
“The garden will serve as an engaging tool for educating students about S.T.E.M. concepts, and the food grown in the garden will be used to host farmer’s markets run by fifth grade students for student families and community members,” explained Brenda. “Additionally, community partners will conduct educational, juicing and chef demonstrations for students throughout the year.”
The garden project was made possible through a $20,000 Carlson Family Foundation grant and the generous gift of time by our volunteers.
Together, Carlson Rezidor has left a lasting legacy within our conference host community!
