DuPont and EOS Climate Commence CFC Buyback Program

DuPont Refrigerants and EOS Climate have announced a new buyback program to incentivize the return of recovered chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerants by paying contractors and business owners for the safe disposal of polluting substances.

DuPont Refrigerants and EOS Climate have announced a new buyback program to incentivize the return of recovered chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerants by paying contractors and business owners for the safe disposal of polluting substances.

The program will be offered through the nationwide network of DuPont refrigerant distributors and reclaim centers as an expansion of the current reclaim program provided by DuPont, according to the announcement.

The initiative is intended to drive responsible handling through return and destruction of all quantities of CFC refrigerants through aggregation at DuPont distributor locations. Eligible refrigerants include R-11, R-12, R-113, R-114, R-115 and R-500.

“We believe this program will motivate contractors and equipment owners to go beyond compliance to reach sustainability goals, reduce their carbon footprint, and capture unrealized economic value,” said Joyce Wallace, North America regional business and marketing manager, DuPont Refrigerants. “We are encouraging our distributors and their customers to promote this CFC collection and destruction initiative.”

For the past several decades, CFCs have been used extensively as refrigerants in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. It is now a well-known fact that CFCs are a major cause of depletion of the earth’s stratospheric ozone layer and contribute to global warming.

“EOS is pleased to partner with DuPont to provide sustainable and economically valuable end-of-life solutions for CFC refrigerants,” said Henry Miner, vice president of stewardship participation at EOS Climate.

The company assists companies in developing “beyond compliance” best practices throughout the lifecycle of their refrigerants, particularly for safe disposal. They also help clients with the generation and sale of carbon offsets from verified destruction of phased-out refrigerants at end of life.
