- Swedish sustainable packaging giant BillerudKorsnäs and researchers at Uppsala University have partnered to bring paper batteries to life. Together, they have taken basic research based on pure cellulose from algae and developed it to work with the same type of fiber that BillerudKorsnäs often uses to manufacture its packaging material — furthering development for both inexpensive and eco-friendly batteries. The long-term aim is to enable large-scale production and the future use of paper batteries for applications in areas such as smart packaging.

- BillerudKorsnäs, a sustainability leader in the global packaging industry and provider of packaging solutions, is encouraging action against ocean litter in a series of just-announced U.S. events, in theme with this year's World Oceans Day. The Swedish company has outlined an ambitious mission to challenge conventional packaging and bring more sustainable practices to the industry.
"Between the growing chorus from consumers to address single-use packaging waste to reports from ocean researchers on declining ocean health, the problem of ocean litter has reached critical awareness," said Peter Malmqvist, BillerudKorsnäs Marketing Director, Americas. "What we need now is collaboration for sustainable development."

- Already today BillerudKorsnäs is largely fossil-free with 97.5 percent biofuels used in the own operation. In order to further contribute to reducing climate change, BillerudKorsnäs has adopted new climate targets for 2030 and 2050, which now has been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative. The approved targets, which are in line with what is required for global warming not to exceed two degrees, are to:
by 2030 reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions from own operations and indirect emissions from purchased energy by at least 59 percent compared to 2016 levels. By 2050, the corresponding emissions should be at least 74 percent lower.

- IVL Swedish Environment Research has analysed the environmental impact of ten products from BillerudKorsnäs. The findings reveal that emissions of greenhouse gases have fallen by between 5 and 19 percent since the previous analysis in 2012.
The products that have been examined are BillerudKorsnäs Artisan, Carry, Decor, Design, Flute®, Light, Liquid FC, Liquid LC, Supreme and White, and the results demonstrate that the company has succeeded in cutting the associated greenhouse gas emissions by 5–19 percent* since 2012. The majority of the reduction is attributable to cuts in the consumption of fossil fuels.

- BillerudKorsnäs is since 2011 a participant in WWF’s Environmental Paper Company Index (EPCI) and has during this period demonstrated transparency and continuous improvement. This year, in the product category Packaging, 73.9 percent (70,6)* was achieved, an improvement of 3.3 percentage points. In the subcategories Responsible Fibre Sourcing and Clean Manufacturing, 74 percent (69) respectively 70 percent (65) were achieved, corresponding to an improvement of five percentage points each. As in the 2015 index, BillerudKorsnäs scores high in terms of transparency with 78 percent (78) in the subcategory Reporting & EMS.

- EcoVadis is the leading system for evaluating suppliers' environmental aspects, working conditions, corporate social responsibility and subcontractors. Multinational brands with high ethical ambitions use the system to evaluate their supply chains in turn.
This year’s evaluation shows that BillerudKorsnäs is among the very best of all companies in the same industry and is also in the top percentage rank among all companies assessed, regardless of industry. It also shows that BillerudKorsnäs improved even more this year.

- Bosch Packaging Technology and BillerudKorsnäs’ collaboration on Sealed Paper Packaging has won the 2017 Sustainability Awards in the Bio-Based Packaging category. The international jury recognized Sealed Paper Packaging specifically for its unique combination of mono-material Axello® paper from BillerudKorsnäs and the ZAP-Module from Bosch Packaging Technology, which together enable the production of 100 percent dust-tight yet fully recyclable packaging for dry products such as sugar, grains and flour. Launched in June 2016, the solution is currently available on vertical form-fill-seal as well as mandrel wheel machines, providing an attractive alternative to the traditional paper bags in this segment.
