Nuancing forestry impacts on biodiversity in LCA
Nuancing forestry impacts on biodiversity in LCA

6 years ago - Corporations are increasingly attuned to the influence of human activity on land use, land use changes and forestry (see LUC Guidance). With systemic thinking, businesses are aware of their supply chain’s impact and they seek additional guidance to fully integrate biodiversity gains and losses in their environmental decision-making. Forestry in particular exerts pressures on biodiversity, which are not fully accounted for in current life cycle inventories and impact assessment methodologies. As a result, life cycle assessments (LCA) strive to appropriately differentiate sustainably managed forests from the rest in terms of their impact on biodiversity.

Regionalizing agricultural lifecycle assessments boosts decision-making
Regionalizing agricultural lifecycle assessments boosts decision-making

6 years ago - Regionalized lifecycle inventory (LCI) modeling generates and links process datasets to the location in which they occur[i]. Given agricultural lifecycle assessments (LCA) are particularly spatially-sensitive, Quantis’s Rainer Zah was involved in developing a framework streamlining the generation of high-resolution crop production datasets in any region of the world. Our experience with applying the framework to the footprint assessment of food, feed, fiber or biofuel and material production shows that it allows decision-makers to consider micro-spatial variations otherwise overlooked in LCA.
