Robert J. (Cita) Welch, Jr.

Robert “Cita” J Welch Jr. is a respected and enrolled member of the Viejas Group of the Captain Grande Band of Mission Indians. Rooted deeply in his people's traditions, culture, and history, he is a lifelong advocate for preserving Indigenous knowledge and wisdom. His life story reflects the resilience and strength of his ancestors, whom he honors through his work, teachings, gardening, and dedication to his community. Raised with a deep respect for his cultural heritage, Cita has always carried the teachings of his ancestors, living in a way that honors their sacrifices and wisdom. His connection to the land is essential to his commitment to maintaining Kumeyaay's traditional ways of being and harvesting.

Cita is descended from a long line of tribal leaders from Capitan Grande. He proudly traces his Kumeyaay ancestry to the Barona Band of Mission Indians through his father, Robert J. Welch Sr., and to the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians through his mother, Carmen Daisy Welch. His mother, a visionary leader who served as Chairwoman of the Viejas tribe, paved the way for future generations. Honoring her legacy, he followed in her footsteps, drawing strength and inspiration from her example. Throughout his life, Cita has dedicated 33 years to uplifting and supporting the members of Viejas through various roles. He served ten years on tribal council, six years as Vice Chairman, and four years as Chairman. Cita has also been the only Viejas tribal member employed from inception to the present day. During his tenure, Viejas built three hotels, remodeled their casino, and increased revenue substantially. He is married to his beautiful wife Mikelene and is the proud father of six children: Caesar, Vanessa, Cameron, Christopher, Thomas, and Jacqueline. He is also the grandfather of Berkeley and is soon to be here Sonoma.

Through his dedication, wisdom, and love for his people, Cita serves as a living bridge between the past and future of the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians.
