Greyhound Installs Telematics to Increase Fuel Efficiency in 1,775 Buses

Greyhound has begun integrating telematics program DriveCam across its entire fleet to optimize safety performance and increase fuel efficiency.

Greyhound has begun integrating telematics program DriveCam across its entire fleet to optimize safety performance and increase fuel efficiency.

The national coach service has agreed to use DriveCam in its vehicles for the next five years after a successful trial in its BoltBus fleet. DriveCam combines data and video analytics with real-time driver feedback and coaching to reduce cost and fuel consumption. An in-cab video captures driving behaviors for later review, when it is scored and passed on to the fleet for use in coaching drivers. The system is managed through DriveCam Online, a web-based online portal.

“Greyhound’s number one focus has always been the safe transportation of millions of passengers every year across North America,” said Dave Leach, president and CEO, Greyhound. “Incorporating DriveCam is one more way we are able to reinforce this focus.”

DriveCam’s Fuel Management Solution combines real-time, in-cab feedback with online reporting and coaching to improve fuel efficiency by up to 12 percent. The program focuses on the three driving behaviors with the greatest impact on fuel efficiency: efficient or “smooth” driving, idling and speeding.

Using technology to analyze and optimize human performance is becoming increasingly more common. UPS has seen notable success with the telematics program it implemented last year, which the company claims has already eliminated more than 39 million minutes of idling time and saved 260,000 gallons of fuel.
