- Detroit, MI (May 2, 2017) – The Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with General Motors, Procter & Gamble and Sustainable Brands are planting 40 trees at the Greening of Detroit Park in honor of Elizabeth Gordon Sachs at 1463 East Jefferson Street on May 22. The tree planting will be done by volunteers attending the 2017 Sustainable Brands Conference -- SB'17 Detroit -- which is being held in Downtown Detroit May 22-25, 2017. The new trees are part of the City of Detroit's efforts to reforest city parks and restore the tree canopy throughout Detroit.

- Leftover scrap sound-deadening material that insulates a variety of Chevrolet engines is now insulating the walls of the NEW Life Center, a jobs development and training facility in Flint, Michigan. General Motors tested the material diverted from its Rochester Operations facility in New York for building applications. - In moves that will spur new energy vehicle demand, two new auto industry partnerships provide a look at a low-carbon economy of the future.
First, Honda Motor Co Ltd and General Motors Co (GM) have announced ambitious plans to expand pollution-free hydrogen fuel power systems in the US from 2020, a move that will not only create new jobs, but also drive forward the shift away from fossil fuel-dependent vehicles.

- General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) and Honda (NYSE: HMC) today announced establishment of the auto industry’s first manufacturing joint venture to mass produce an advanced hydrogen fuel cell system that will be used in future products from each company.
Fuel Cell System Manufacturing, LLC will operate within GM’s existing battery pack manufacturing facility site in Brownstown, Michigan, south of Detroit. Mass production of fuel cell systems is expected to begin around 2020 and create nearly 100 new jobs. The companies are making equal investments totaling $85 million in the joint venture.

- The rooftop garden next to General Motors’ Renaissance Center world headquarters wrapped up another productive growing season. Now in its third year, the garden – thriving from the landfill-free facility’s compost – resulted in 815 pounds of fresh produce, 150 jars of honey, and $3,546.00 in donations to a community shelter located across the street.
Andiamo Detroit, an Italian restaurant inside the headquarters, made eggplant parmesan, spicy salsa and bruschetta for customers using the garden’s vegetables and herbs. In turn, the restaurant owner made a donation equal to the food’s value to the nearby warming center.

- In 2016, General Motors awarded $1.7 million to nonprofit organizations located in and serving General Motors communities across the U.S. through the company’s Community Grants Program.
With a special focus in the areas of STEM education, vehicle and road safety, neighborhood revitalization and workforce development, the program allows facilities to designate grant funding to organizations vital to addressing the needs of the employees and customers in their region.
“GM’s commitment to our local communities runs deep,” said Lori Wingerter, senior manager, Global Corporate Giving at GM. “While building cars that people love is why we’re there, the Community Grants Program empowers our neighbors and fosters sustainable change in the communities we serve.”

- Every 15 years, the United Nations gets together to determine its next steps in bettering the earth and the people on it. In late 2015, this took the form of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
The SDGs focus on climate action, decreasing poverty, increasing access to health, reducing inequality, and increasing sustainable development, in both rural and developed areas, over the next 15 years. Although the goals appear broad and ambitious, the UN aims to further the advancement of people while protecting and fostering the health and wellbeing of the planet.
