Bill Weihl, who recently resigned as Google’s “Green Energy Czar,” will take on a similar position with Facebook at the end of January.
For six years Weihl led Google’s clean energy initiatives, but left the company in November when the search engine giant announced it would end research into solar thermal energy and other renewable energy technologies to focus on core activities.
Weihl joins Facebook just as the company ramps up efforts to acquire more green power and reduce electricity consumption. Last month, the company announced a new clean energy policy in response to a two-year Greenpeace campaign that challenged the company to “Unfriend Coal.”
According to the blog Fresh Dialogues, which first broke the story, Weihl’s new position will focus on sustainability, clean energy and energy efficiency.
