BASF supports sustainable construction as pilot partner for Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3 ) tool

Neopor® GPS insulation contributes to lower embodied carbon in construction projects

BASF is pleased to announce the company’s role as a pilot partner for the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3) tool — a free, open-source online tool designed to easily calculate the carbon emissions of building materials.

The EC3 tool will launch on Tuesday, November 19 at the Greenbuild® International Conference and Expo in Atlanta, GA. It was developed under the leadership of the Carbon Leadership Forum in collaboration with Skanska and key development partner C-Change Lab.

“BASF is committed to contributing to a world that provides a sustainable future with enhanced quality of life for everyone,” said Luis Espada, Head of Business Management, Neopor North America. “One of the ways we do this is creating products like Neopor GPS insulation, which gives architects and building owners a solution to help lower the carbon footprint of their buildings.”

Neopor GPS is a graphite polystyrene rigid foam insulation that provides maximum efficiency, cost-effectiveness and sustainability on construction projects because it uses up to 30% less material than alternative products.

Neopor GPS directly supports the intent of the EC3 tool — to help building professionals quantify, report and reduce the embodied carbon impact of their projects. Embodied carbon is the carbon dioxide emitted during the manufacturing, transportation and installation of building materials. It is estimated that between now and 2060, the amount of building floorspace in the world will double, and at least half of the carbon footprint of new buildings will take the form of embodied carbon.

Neopor GPS has already been recognized for its sustainability benefits. It is GreenGuard Gold certified and has been recognized by both The Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) building rating system.
