Novozymes wins textile innovation award for sustainable process improvements

The Society of Dyers and Colorists (SDC) revealed the winners of their annual innovation award recently in York, UK. As the world’s leading educational charity dedicated to advancing the science and technology of color worldwide, the SDC award recognizes innovation that has the potential to be an industry game-changer. The coveted award was won by Novozymes for their patented Combi process, an innovative solution that makes it possible for textile manufacturers to combine the biopolishing and bleach clean-up process ( the removal of residual hydrogen peroxide) in the dyeing step, and in turn, save time, energy, water consumption and ultimately cost.

Naturally better textile processing The SDC’s competition encouraged ideas that are innovative in their product, process or service, with commercial viability, and the potential to make a difference. Novozymes’ innovative solutions have helped textile manufacturers to create more durable and high quality textiles for over 60 years. The Novozymes Combi process is an excellent example of how bio-innovation can deliver tangible benefits for textile manufacturers and improve their sustainability profile. “We’re delighted to win the SDC Innovation Award, and we’re very proud of our proprietary Combi process being recognized as state of the art technology by such a competent group of textile industry experts,” says Han Kuilderd, Industry Technology Manager for Novozymes Textiles, “Using neutral cellulases to combine the biopolishing and bleach clean-up processes in one bath can save up to 90 minutes when compared to traditional processes while saving water used and securing substantial energy savings. Textile manufacturers will benefit from using this robust solution that offers consistent results.” Truly good business Better quality textiles are a significant differentiator for major brands, and with sustainability continuously growing in importance, Novozymes’ effective biosolutions can help manufacturers to create exceptional fabrics that stand out while achieving their sustainability goals. “When it comes to creating a more sustainable textile industry, we believe that creating better quality and more durable textiles that last longer is key. That’s exactly what the Combi process does,” says Han Kuilderd, “Through eliminating the formation of fuzz and pills on fabrics during the dyeing process, consumers can keep clothes looking newer for longer after repeated wash and wear.”
