The formation of this alliance represents another way in which UL can serve as one-stop sustainability solutions provider to manufacturers in the electronics industry. “UL’s participation in this pilot program bolsters our commitment to serving the environmental needs of electronics manufacturers,” says Sara Greenstein, president of UL Environment. “Now, manufacturers can rely on UL not only to guide them through the EPEAT registration process, but also to help them take advantage of a robust suite of additional sustainability services, including lifecycle-based environmental performance certifications, environmental claim validations, and indoor air quality testing and certification, among others.” UL’s new alliance with EPEAT represents the evolution of the EPEAT system from one in which both verification and registration are managed centrally to a pilot system in which third-party organizations serve as Product Registration Entities, or PREs, to help manufacturers register their products to a central registry. The EPEAT certification model requires that products be evaluated against environmental performance criteria and that, following registration into the EPEAT system, the products are regularly monitored. UL Environment is one of only four organizations in the world selected to collaborate with EPEAT in this capacity. “UL’s longstanding familiarity with the electronics sector and capacity for environmental claims assessment through the UL Environment business unit ideally suit them to participate in EPEAT’s expanding network,” said Robert Frisbee, CEO of EPEAT. “We are very happy to collaborate with UL on increasing the reach and supporting the rigor of the EPEAT rating system to forward the ‘greening’ of electronics.” About UL Environment UL Environment, a business unit of UL, works to advance global sustainability, environmental health, and safety by supporting the growth and development of environmentally preferable products, services, and organizations.
