Target Installing Solar Power Systems at 5 Stores in Colorado

Target Corp. is installing solar power systems on five of its stores in the Denver metro area.

The Minneapolis-based company (NYSE: TGT) said today that the solar power systems will generate about one-third of the power each store consumes. Over a year, the systems on the five stores will produce a total of more than 3,800 megawatt-hours of power, enough power to supply the needs of 285 homes for a year. Work on installation of the systems is underway at the five Colorado stores, the company said.

“We are proud to be helping the state reach its clean energy goals with more than 10 percent of our stores in Colorado now outfitted with solar installations and we’re optimistic about growing our solar footprint in the state in the future,” said John Leisen, Target’s vice president for properties.

“Target is committed to enriching the communities we serve, and operating energy-efficient and sustainable buildings is one way we are following through on that promise in Colorado,” he said.

The five stores are:

Aurora South, at 15700 East Briarwood Circle, expected completion in March.
Arapahoe, at 6767 South Clinton St. in Englewood, expected completion in March.
Arvada, at 7899 Wadsworth Blvd., expected completion in March.
Edgewater, at 1985 Sheridan Blvd., expected completion in April.
Highlands Ranch, at 1265 Sergeant Jon Stiles Dr., expected completion in December.

Last October, Target nabbed the top spot among American businesses adding solar power to their operations during 2016, according to a report from the Solar Energy Industries Association. The report, called the 2016 Solar Means Business report, tracked nearly 1,100 megawatts worth of solar power installations at locations operated by America’s top companies. Collectively, the corporate-backed solar power systems generated enough power to meet the needs of about 193,000 homes every year.

The Colorado stores getting solar power systems are part of Target’s plan to have 500 stores with rooftop solar panels by 2020, the company said. The systems are being installed by SunPower Corp. (Nasdaq: SPWR), based in San Jose, California.

“We’re proud to partner with Target as it leads the nation’s retail industry in solar adoption,” said Nam Nguyen, SunPower’s senior vice president for commercial system, in a statement.

“With over 90 SunPower systems currently operating or planned for Target facilities across the country, SunPower is honored to install Target’s first systems in Colorado, and we look forward to helping Target achieve its visionary sustainability goals with solar,” she said.
