Ford Motor Company is honored to again receive an “A” grade for its water conservation efforts from CDP, the international not-for-profit that drives sustainable economies. The company also received an “A-” grade for its climate change efforts.

Managing company water in a sustainable way can drive both business and community value. CDP, a nonprofit global environmental disclosure platform, listed GM on its Water A-List for effective water management practices implemented around the world.
CDP develops the ranking at the request of 827 investors with assets over $100 trillion. Hundreds of companies submit their information for assessment and scoring, with 10 percent making it on the A list.
Beyond the environmental benefits, GM sees the following drivers behind industrial water conservation.

Flowing through south-central British Columbia is a crisp river, idyllically flanked by black cliffs.
But in the 1970s, the clear water of the Thompson River took on a brown hue and bubbled with foam. Rocks were covered with a thick slime. Area leaders grew concerned that a harmful algal bloom might be to blame, which had potential to harm ecology, area residents and the river’s 24 species of fish, including salmon and rainbow trout.
An investigation began into the effects of industrial and municipal discharge – particularly from the Domtar’s Kamloops pulp mill and the City of Kamloops.

Microplastics — extremely small pieces (less than 5 mm) of plastic debris resulting from the disposal and breakdown of consumer products and industrial waste — have been found in tap water around the globe, according to a new report by Orb Media, a D.C.-based nonprofit digital newsroom. The discovery has led to a call from the scientific community for urgent research on microplastics’ implications for human health.
