Barron’s Names Best Buy Most Sustainable Company In U.S.

At Best Buy, we’re proud of the hard work we do to positively impact our communities, people and the environment. And we’re excited that others are taking notice.

Barron’s has named Best Buy No. 1 on its list of the 100 Most Sustainable Companies for 2019. We ranked third when the publication’s inaugural list came out last year.

“Sustainability is embedded in everything we do,” Best Buy Chairman and CEO Hubert Joly said. “It starts with the company’s philosophy to contribute to the common good and our purpose to enrich lives through technology by addressing key human needs.”

This prestigious honor reflects more than a decade of work contributing to the common good. Examples include:

  • Collecting nearly 2 billion pounds of appliances and electronics through our comprehensive e-waste recycling program.
  • Reducing our carbon emissions by 51 percent since 2009, well on our way to our goal of 60 percent.
  • Expanding our network of Teen Tech Centers to 22 locations and making great progress toward our goal of 60 Teen Tech Centers by the end of 2020. These facilities are preparing teens from underserved communities for the tech-reliant jobs of the future.
  • Adding new employee benefits to include enhanced mental health coverage, backup child care, caregiver leave and paid time off for part-time employees.

How Barron’s created its list

The Barron’s ranking began with the 1,000 largest publicly held companies in the U.S. It applied and weighted more than 300 performance indicators for each company on topics that included community engagement, human rights, carbon emissions, business ethics and more.

Barron’s is a leading source of financial and investment news. It teamed with Calvert Research and Management, a prominent sustainable investing firm, to produce the ranking.

Best Buy also recently received recognition for our efforts to reduce the impacts of climate change by being named to CDP’s Climate A List.
