At Best Buy, we’re proud to play our part in creating a more sustainable future, from launching green initiatives to offering products that help the earth (and your wallet). From Earth Month and beyond, here’s how we’re taking care of our planet, and helping our customers do the same:
Reduce, reuse, recycle and repair
If your device or appliance isn’t working quite right, Geek Squad can help determine if repairing it is an option to extend its life.
That old technology you never use anymore doesn’t need to go in the trash. In fact, we’d love to have it. Bring it on in to Best Buy. You can trade in eligible devices for a Best Buy gift card, allowing you to upgrade your tech while also getting the most mileage out of every device. Of course, not every device can be reused, which is where recycling comes in.
Best Buy is the country’s largest retail recycler of electronics and appliances. No matter where you bought it or what kind of shape it’s in, we’ll take it off your hands and responsibly recycle your e-waste. We’ve collected nearly 2 billion pounds of e-waste to date, and we’re looking forward to keeping even more technology out of landfills.
Plus, we now make paper gift cards that are recyclable. We predict it will keep an additional 18 tons of plastic out of landfills per year.
A good mix of green tech
Many of our products carry the ENERGY STAR® stamp of approval, so you know you’re getting the best of the best when it comes to saving energy (which also saves you money). Since 2009, we’ve helped customers save nearly $800 million in utility costs. For the sixth year in a row, we were even named an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year!
From appliances to light bulbs to thermostats, we’ve got a great selection of Mother-Nature approved products that will help you reduce your home’s environmental impact.
Big plans for cutting carbon
We’re on a mission to cut carbon emissions in our operations. Since 2009, we’ve already cut emissions by 51 percent. There are two big ways we’ve been making that happen. We’re harnessing the power of energy-efficient technology to change the way we do business — including LED lighting and a more sustainable fleet of Geekmobile vehicles. And, we’re sourcing offsite renewable energy by purchasing certified Renewable Energy Credits.
We’re not the only ones who have noticed
Recently, Best Buy was named No. 1 on Barron’s list of the 100 Most Sustainable Companies for 2019. This recognition is a result of the hard work we do for our communities, people and the environment.
On top of that, we also made the CDP Climate A List, ranking in the top tier of companies fighting climate change. This was a huge honor, as we were only one of two U.S. retailers who made the list this year.
We look forward to making future progress on our eco-excellence and empowering our customers to live more sustainably.
