This Spring, if you’re shopping for the latest smartphone or tablet, you now have a resource for understanding the environmental and social factors associated with your device. Today, I’m thrilled to report that the first devices rated under AT&T’s Eco-Rating 2.0 are hitting our store shelves. From evaluating products at your initial shopping experience, to responsibly trading in and recycling them through our Buyback Program at the end of their usable lives – with Earth Day right around the corner, the timing couldn’t be better in helping us all keep our sustainability values top of mind.

AT&T first launched its eco-rating system for phones in 2012 to provide a simple and comprehensive way for consumers to make better informed decisions and consider sustainability when purchasing a device. This year, AT&T joined other tech innovators at the International Consumer Electronics Showcase (CES) and unveiled Eco-Rating 2.0, an updated rating system that assigns each AT&T-branded mobile device a 1-5 star rating based on a set of 20 criteria (up from the original 15) across five attributes.

New to Eco-Rating 2.0 is the inclusion of social factors in our rating criteria, like human rights and labor issues associated with device manufacturing. We added these criteria because 74 percent of customers surveyed told us that they cared about their device being made in a socially responsible way.

Not only that, AT&T-branded tablets now join smartphones and feature phones in the portfolio of eco-rated devices, giving you information about sustainability attributes across device types.

This is a proud moment for us here at AT&T and a win for consumers. Providing this additional level of information can help us all navigate the shifting landscapes of technology and sustainability. This year, on Earth Day, we invite you to become more familiar with our enhanced rating system and check it out for yourself! Tell us what else you’re doing to make the world a better place on April 22 by tweeting to @ConnectToGood or using #ATTImpact.
