GRI, the UN Global Compact and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) have launched a new tool to help companies navigate and contribute to a new set of global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations last week.

The SDG Compass is a guide that companies can use to align their strategies with the relevant SDGs, and measure and manage their impacts. It is supported by a live and constantly updated inventory of business indicators and tools.

All 193 Member States of the United Nations reached agreement on the SDGs, but their success relies heavily on action and collaboration by all actors, WBCSD says. The SDG Compass acknowledges this and incorporates feedback from companies, government agencies, academic institutions and civil society organizations from around the world.

The tool was launched as part of this year’s UN Private Sector Forum, which brings together CEOs and heads of state to the United Nations each year to discuss issues such as climate change, global development and human rights.

How to incorporate the SDGs into business strategy was a topic of discussion at the Sustainable Brands 2015 conference, and will extend to next month's New Metrics '15 and SB '15 London in November.

To help promote awareness of the new SDG goals, Richard Curtis, filmmaker and founder of Comic Relief, has launched Project Everyone, which aims to share the goals with seven billion people over seven days. From September 25 to October 1, 2015, the goal is "to get a snappy explanation of the goals onto every website, TV station, cinema, school, radio station, newspaper, magazine, billboard, newsletter, noticeboard, pinboard, milk carton and mobile phone.”
