Coca-Cola, Walt Disney Company and Johnson & Johnson are among the founding corporate members of the Innovations in Environmental Sustainability Council, a group of global companies coming together to address major sustainability challenges.

The council was created by IBM and the World Environment Center (WEC), a global non-profit organization that advances sustainable development through the business practices of global companies.

The companies will meet for the first time February 7-8 in Orlando, Florida to explore how innovation in business process and technology can enable strategic solutions involving materials, energy, water, infrastructure and logistics.

IBM says companies will be able to apply what is learned from this collaboration within their own organizations, not only to achieve greater efficiency and effectiveness through operations, but also to identify and develop related opportunities for innovation and growth.

Other charter members include Boeing, CH2M HILL, The Dow Chemical Company, F. Hoffmann-La Roche AG, General Motors, IBM and the World Environment Center (WEC).

Bart King is a PR consultant and principal at Cleantech Communications.
