Bristol-Myers Squibb, Johnson & Johnson, and Gap have topped CR Magazine’s 2014 100 Best Corporate Citizens List, which ranks companies based on disclosure and performance measures covering environment, climate change, employee relations, human rights, governance, finance and philanthropy.
Now in its 15th year, the list documents 298 data points of disclosure and performance measures acquired from publicly available information in the aforementioned categories. Microsoft, Mattel, Weyerhaeuser, Ecolab, Intel, Coca-Cola, and Walt Disney Company rounded out the top ten.
Notably, some 23 companies made the 2014 list that did not make the 2013 list. Seventeen companies have been on the list every year since 2008. This year, 33 companies rose an average of 20 ranks. However, some 42 companies fell an average of 17 ranks.
Interestingly, AT&T — which was ranked No. 1 on the 2013 list — fell to No. 49 on the 2014 list.
"CR Magazine's 100 Best Corporate Citizens is the only ranking that doesn't rely on self-reporting," said Elliot Clark, CEO of CR Magazine. "Each year, we measure the most transparent companies who report on their responsible practices."
We are well into the annual “list/ranking” season. In March, B Lab released the “Best for the World” list, which recognizes companies for overall social and environmental impact. And earlier this week, Patagonia, GoLite, Seventh Generation, New Belgium Brewing Company and 80 other global companies made B Lab’s “Best for the Environment” list, which honors businesses that earned top scores under a rigorous and comprehensive assessment of a company's impact on its workers, community and the environment.
