Best Buy’s environmental report card is out – and we’re at the top of the class when it comes to tackling climate change.
It’s a big deal for us because CDP (formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project) is the global authority on environmental issues, including climate change.
This is the third time CDP has recognized Best Buy as an environmental leader on the Climate A List. The distinction puts Best Buy among the top 5 percent of companies participating in CDP’s climate change program. And we’re one of only two U.S. retailers named to this year’s list of 126 companies.
Making a positive impact on our communities, in this case reducing carbon in our operations, has been a focus at Best Buy for a decade. It’s not only the right thing to do for the environment, but it’s also good for business. When we transitioned our Geek Squad fleet to hybrid vehicles, we saved money on gas and maintenance costs. But that’s just one example.
We have reduced our carbon emissions by 51 percent (over a 2009 baseline), well on our way to meeting our goal of 60 percent reduction by 2020. We’re especially excited about what’s to come. As one example, we are investing in renewable energy sources and making our stores even more energy-efficient by installing overhead LED lights in more than 500 locations.
CDP is an international nonprofit that drives companies to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and safeguard natural resources. More than 7,000 companies disclosed environmental data through CDP in 2018, and many investors will use that information to help make investment decisions.
