The 2014 Corporate Sustainability Awards: 5 Companies That Bravely and Brilliantly Led the Pack

4 years ago - 2014 was a year of stunning statistics and some moments of brilliance from a few brands. Unfortunately, most of the numbers were of the gloom and doom variety: warmest year, worst drought, worsening economic inequality — not to mention Ebola, war, and a looming sixth Great Extinction. Was the business community’s response proportionate to the scale of the problems that were revealed? What actions stand out? I have five, admittedly subjective, awards to give out.

Why CVS' 'No Smokes' Decision Is Big News for Forward-Thinking Brands
Why CVS' 'No Smokes' Decision Is Big News for Forward-Thinking Brands

5 years ago - On Feb. 5, drugstore chain CVS Caremark announced that it will stop selling tobacco products. It’s a big deal. Here’s why.It signals a step towards more businesses saying, “It’s wrong. It creates new, safe middle ground to operate more openly from the “morals” argument as a valued partner to the “money” business case argument.

While the prevalence of cigarette smoking has decreased from around 42 percent of adults in 1965 to 18 percent today, the rate of reduction in smoking prevalence has stalled in the past decade.
