Lyft, United Way Join Forces to Provide Free Rides to Those in Need

In early May, we announced an expansion of the Lyft Relief Rides Program to do more than respond to natural disasters and other crises. With individuals across our service area in need every day, we saw an opportunity to have a greater impact and advance our mission of improving people’s lives with the world’s best transportation.

In early May, we announced an expansion of the Lyft Relief Rides Program to do more than respond to natural disasters and other crises. With individuals across our service area in need every day, we saw an opportunity to have a greater impact and advance our mission of improving people’s lives with the world’s best transportation.

That’s why we committed $1.5 million to the Lyft Relief Rides program over the next year, and are working with partners across the country to deliver these rides to those who need them most.

As part of the partnership, Lyft will partner with United Way and 2-1-1 in 12 cities across the country. 2-1-1 is a free, confidential referral and information helpline and website that connects people to essential services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by phone, text and on the web.

“Last year, our 2-1-1 network received more than 250,000 transportation requests nationwide, and 20 percent of those could not be met with existing resources,” said United Way Worldwide U.S. President Mary Sellers. “By partnering with Lyft, we’re better able to meet community needs by helping individuals get the services they require.”

Through this partnership, free Lyft rides will be made available to individuals who seek assistance from 2-1-1 and meet specific criteria. Rides will be used for non-emergency medical treatment, job interviews and other employment related needs; and veterans' services in Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Cleveland, Denver, Houston, Milwaukee, Nashville, Orlando, Philadelphia, San Diego and San Francisco.

“United Way is a worldwide leader in addressing the complex challenges faced by vulnerable communities,” said Lyft co-founder and President John Zimmer. “Their dedication and ability to reach thousands of individuals in need through 2-1-1 makes them an ideal partner for Lyft Relief Rides. We appreciate the opportunity to join forces and expand our collective impact in local communities across the country."
