I have worked at AT&T for over 18 years. Most of that time has been spent in various sales and operations roles and I’ve really enjoyed my time with this company. But I’ve particularly enjoyed the past three years leading our community engagement programs. Why? Because I get to see firsthand how community investment and volunteer service impacts people and their communities. Because I get to see how corporations and small businesses across the country who participate in this work are so much more than product or service providers. This visibility has changed my life. It’s caused me to rethink my personal priorities and increased my awareness of how simple acts of giving and service can lead to positive changes in society. At AT&T, many of our employees are extremely active in their communities. They volunteer their time to mentor students across the country and support environmental causes and organizations. They help rebuild homes and restore normalcy when natural disasters strike. And they regularly communicate the dangers of texting while driving in schools, at home and among their friends. Last year our employees and retirees gave more than 5.3 million hours of volunteer service to their communities and continue to build our culture of service and giving. Being named one of the 50 most community minded corporations by the Civic 50 for the third consecutive year is important. Whether it’s our commitment to provide students with 1 million hours of mentoring or our It Can Wait campaign that has attracted more than 2,500 organizations and 65,000 individuals to help end texting while driving, it reinforces the significance of our community work. But most importantly, this recognition acknowledges that the selfless acts of our employees are not going unnoticed. Over the next couple of weeks we will be highlighting employee activities that have helped us achieve this distinction. Congratulations to all of our employees who have contributed to this award and thank you for inspiring me by your giving and service.
