“A company’s revenue only tells half the story,” said Jay Coen Gilbert, co-founder of B Lab. “Today’s most successful businesses must also create a positive social and environmental impact. These companies are competing to be not only the best in the world, but the best for the world.”

Other highlighted companies include Roshan, a Afghani telecommunications provider; One PacificCoast Bank, a community development bank; and Cooperative Home Care Associates, the nation’s largest worker-owned cooperative that provides home care services to the elderly and individuals living with disabilities. Some 30 percent of the honorees are based outside the U.S., with 13 companies operating in emerging markets.

B Lab says it also will release separate lists recognizing the companies “Best for the Environment,” “Best for the Community” and “Best for Workers” throughout the coming year.

B Lab’s “Best for the World” list made its debut in 2012 and included companies such as Method, Patagonia and King Arthur Flour.
