Stella McCartney, Telus Join Initiative to Tackle Paper Packaging Problem

Participation in Canopy’s Pack4Good initiative to keep the world’s ancient and endangered forests out of packaging supply chains doubles, with the addition of 11 new companies.

Along with the growing wave of efforts to rein in the surge in single-use plastic waste since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, 11 more major brands have signed on to Canopy’s Pack4Good initiative — aiming to do the same for paper-based packaging.

The surge in COVID-fueled online shopping, and the massive amount of packaging involved, has once again brought to light the substantial impact of paper-based packaging on the world’s forests, wildlife and climate. So, 11 new companies — including Stella McCartney, prAna and Telus — have joined the initiative to transform packaging supply chains by increasing the use of recycled and alternative fibers, and smarter design to ensure the world’s ancient and endangered forests do not end up as shipping boxes and single-use packaging. Launched in October, Pack4Good now includes 22 companies — representing 71 brands and $66 billion in annual revenues.

“At Stella McCartney, we do all we can to protect the planet and keep people safe. A great way to do this is by keeping trees standing and getting forests, especially ancient and endangered forests, out of the packaging supply chain,” says Stella McCartney, who has also signed on to Canopy’s CanopyStyle campaign, which is striving to eliminate virgin-forest fibers from fashion and textile supply chains. “We are proud to be a part of Canopy’s Pack4Good initiative, implementing real-time solutions to keep forests standing and shift the packaging supply chain to next-generation alternatives.”

Building on independent recent efforts from companies including BillerudKorsnäs, Carlsberg and L’Oréal, Pack4Good partners are committed to ensuring that, by the end of 2022, all of their packaging is:

  • Free of ancient and endangered forests

  • Designed to reduce material use

  • Maximizing recycled and alternative fibers

  • Using FSC-certified paper when virgin forest fiber continues to be used.
