10 years ago - Last month, BBMG, GlobeScan and SustainAbility released The 2013 Aspirational Consumer Index, a report that confirms the rise of nearly 2.5 billion consumers globally who are uniting style, social status and sustainability values to redefine consumption. According to the report, more than one-third of consumers globally (36.4%) identify as Aspirationals, defined by their love of shopping (78%), desire for responsible consumption (92%) and their trust in brands to act in the best interest of society (58%).

10 years ago - Unilever, KT and Nestlé lead the Tomorrow’s Value Rating 2013 (TVR), which recognizes companies that increasingly demonstrate “clarity of vision and innovation in their pursuit of a sustainable business model.”Sprint, Vodafone, Iberdrola, E.ON, BMW, Ford and Deutsche Telekom rounded out the top 10. Two Tomorrows, the sustainability strategy consultancy that created the rating, says the average for the top 10 this year is 83 percent compared to 55 percent in 2010. While the average score across the companies rated has varied only slightly over recent years, in that time the highest scores have gotten higher. There also is a growing gap between sustainability leaders and laggards, the report says.

BMW has launched an app called ‘BMW i3: Become Electric’ that allows users to virtually test drive the i3 on their smartphone or tablet.The German luxury carmaker says the app “invites users to assume the position of the driver and supporting actor in a dramatic, fast-paced race to save the world.” The app is shot in 360-degree detail using complete surround sound.Users technically only control the virtual vehicles once — tapping the screen to “press” the accelerator pedal. While users also can operate the sat-nav when prompted, they mostly are just a passenger in the storyline.

10 years ago - Fifty of the world’s 500 largest companies are responsible for nearly three quarters of the group’s 3.6 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, according to the CDP Global 500 Climate Change Report 2013.Most of the top 50 carbon-polluting companies operate in the energy, materials and utilities sectors, the report says. The carbon dioxide emitted by these companies has risen by 1.65 percent to 2.54 billion metric tons over the past four years — equivalent to adding more than 8.5 million pickup trucks to the streets.

10 years ago - CODA Energy has partnered with Energy Vault and Growing Energy Labs (GELI), to deploy the first Eco-Station, a solar integrated electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging station optimized by energy storage, in the San Francisco Bay Area.CODA says the charging station will incorporate a 175 kW solar array, DC fast charging, a 40kWh CODA Core UDP energy storage system, and GELI's intelligent Energy Operating System (EOS) software.DC charging refuels a typical EV battery in 30-60 minutes and improves the usability of EVs by extending their effective range and enabling road trips. However, CODA says these stations require high quantities of power to operate, which is expensive to run during peak hours and can add up to hundreds or thousands of dollars per month.

10 years ago - BMW has introduced its new BMW i3 electric vehicle (EV) with an "add-on mobility" option, which is part of an effort to win a “meaningful” portion of the EV market by helping owners bypass the traditional impediments to owning EVs.To help curb “range anxiety,” or the fear of being stranded when the battery runs out of juice, BMW is allowing EV owners to borrow gas-powered BMW vehicles for longer drives outside of the current EV range. This comes as part of the company’s wider drive to expand the appeal of its i3 EV.The projected range for its i3 standard model is around 80 to 100 miles on a single charge, BMW says. The company expects the EV market to grow between 150,000 and 160,000 vehicles globally this year, from 7,000 in 2010.
