- Those who have been itching to test-drive the new BMW i3 now need look no further than the Apple App Store. BMW has launched an app called ‘BMW i3: Become Electric’ that allows users to virtually test drive the i3 on their smartphone or tablet.The German luxury carmaker says the app “invites users to assume the position of the driver and supporting actor in a dramatic, fast-paced race to save the world.” The app is shot in 360-degree detail using complete surround sound.Users technically only control the virtual vehicles once — tapping the screen to “press” the accelerator pedal. While users also can operate the sat-nav when prompted, they mostly are just a passenger in the storyline.

- In June, the Tesla Model S outsold several well-established vehicle brands in California — including Porsche, Buick and Lincoln — according to a recent report from the California New Car Dealers Association (CNCDA), using data sourced from Polk.The electric car company also outsold Cadillac and both Jaguar and Land Rover combined. Even Infiniti — a long-established, full-luxury brand — posted only 51 more registrations.

- The Tesla Model S has received a five-star safety rating in every subcategory from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), making it part of the one percent of all vehicles tested by the federal government to achieve a perfect score.While NHTSA does not publish a star rating above 5, safety levels better than five stars are captured in the overall Vehicle Safety Score (VSS) provided to manufacturers, where the Model S achieved a new combined record of 5.4 stars.Tesla says the Model S set a new record for the lowest likelihood of injury to occupants. While the Model S is a sedan, it also exceeded the safety score of all SUVs and minivans, which takes into account the probability of injury from front, side, rear and rollover accidents.

- BMW has introduced its new BMW i3 electric vehicle (EV) with an "add-on mobility" option, which is part of an effort to win a “meaningful” portion of the EV market by helping owners bypass the traditional impediments to owning EVs.To help curb “range anxiety,” or the fear of being stranded when the battery runs out of juice, BMW is allowing EV owners to borrow gas-powered BMW vehicles for longer drives outside of the current EV range. This comes as part of the company’s wider drive to expand the appeal of its i3 EV.The projected range for its i3 standard model is around 80 to 100 miles on a single charge, BMW says. The company expects the EV market to grow between 150,000 and 160,000 vehicles globally this year, from 7,000 in 2010.

- Billionaire chairman and CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX visionary Elon Musk says he will release designs next month for a system capable of rapidly transporting people from Los Angeles to San Francisco via a tube in under 30 minutes.In several recent Twitter posts, the real-life Tony Stark has stated he will be “happy to work with the right partners” on the project, called Hyperloop, as long as they share his vision of developing the technology “fast and without wasting money.”Musk says he is welcoming “critical feedback” on the system and will publish his plans by August 12 as open source.

- Tesla Motors has introduced a system that allows battery packs in electric vehicles to be swapped in roughly 90 seconds.At an event last week, the electric car company’s CEO Elon Musk said that the system provides an alternative to charging EVs, helping to convince consumers they are “more convenient than a gasoline car.” Musk gave a demonstration of the new technology on stage, switching out two Model S battery packs in less time than it took for a car on a video screen to fill up with gas, which took about four minutes.
