It was 1983 when an engineer from Michigan met a Yellow-Naped parrot from Honduras. Little did Joe Azzarello know that “Otis” would be a part of the family for 33 years (and counting) and would affect not only his personal life but his career as well.
“I’ll admit I had very little environmental sensitivity before I adopted Otis,” said Joe, shaking his head.
Kohler’s resident green-building guru is well-known in the industry, but his career started out on a very different path. Joe was working as a mechanical engineer for a power company when Otis came into his life. It was while researching parrots at his local library that Joe became aware of the plight of the bird’s natural habitat.

General Motors China engaged eight of its parts suppliers in a yearlong “Green Supply Chain” initiative designed to reduce energy consumption. The suppliers implemented 64 projects that resulted in emissions and facility noise reductions, as well as optimized lighting and energy management system improvements.
Altogether, these suppliers realized savings of more than 9.3 million yuan ($1.3 million), and reduced carbon dioxide by more than 5,500 metric tons. This is the equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 142,000 trees grown in the U.S. for 10 years.
GM China supported the suppliers through training programs, energy audits and conservation projects.

As the honeybee population in the U.S. continues its three-decade-long decline, Ford employee Mary Mason has taken up the task of
caring for tens of thousands of bees right outside the Ford Rouge Complex.
That’s right, the complex, home to thousands of factory workers, is also home to 80,000 honeybees, thanks to Mason and the company’s wildlife habitat strategy, which in the last decade-and-a-half has brought nature back to a once gray and black facility.

Ford has announced that it will offer its employees in Shanghai with ongoing education about the importance of recycling e-waste and access to an e-waste recycling system. The program, financially supported by the Ford Fund, is part of Better World Initiative and done in partnership with Green Initiatives’ [WE] Project.
The more than 1,000 employees of Ford headquarters will be able to place used electronics in numerous collection boxes located around the facility. Items can include mobile phones, appliances, storage devices such as external hard drives and USB drives, physical media including CDs and video games, entertainment equipment such as televisions and musical instruments, and electronics of all varieties.

Procter & Gamble global chief executive David Taylor met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday to discuss the company's manufacturing initiatives in the country and partnership opportunities in education and the government's cleanliness drive.
In line with P&G's global sustainability goals, the company said it has offered to help the country's Clean India Initiative (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan) by using technology to reduce waste to landfill that will up-cycle sanitary waste.
The maker of Ariel and Pampers appointed Taylor as its chief a year ago amid falling global sales and restructuring of its products portfolio. Internationally, Taylor has been reorganising P&G's brand portfolio, focusing on the core ones and selling dozens of unprofitable brands.

Delivery giant UPS and drone manufacturer CyPhy Works have started testing a CyPhy hexacopter to deliver packages to remote locations. On September 22, the companies conducted a mock delivery of urgently needed medicine from Beverly, Mass., to Children’s Island, three miles off the Massachusetts coast.
UPS is not new to the drone industry; the Atlanta-based logistics concern acknowledged last year that it was testing drones to monitor stock in its warehouse facilities. That testing is being done at warehouses in Louisville, Ky., and Venlo, the Netherlands. More recently, Houston Mills, UPS Airlines' director of safety, was named to the FAA’s high-level Drone Advisory Committee, which held its first public meeting on September 16.

Hefty Energy Bag - a unique program designed to convert previously non-recycled plastics into energy, recently launched in the Omaha area. Plastics collected through the program will be sorted at a local recycling facility and converted into energy used in cement production. The program’s initial phase could divert an estimated 36 tons of previously non-recycled plastic from Omaha area landfills, equivalent to the use of 50 tons of coal.

The Recycling Partnership, Falls Church, Virginia, has welcomed Target Corp., headquartered in Minneapolis, as its first retail company member. With the addition of Target, members of The Recycling Partnership now represent the entire recycling system for consumer packaging, including manufacturers, brands, retailers and the recycling industry. The nonprofit says this means that members across all sectors have committed to working together to make recycling stronger and to recover more materials for use in manufacturing.

What would you do if you couldn’t afford enough diapers for your baby? One in three families in the United States is affected by diaper need, or not having enough diapers to keep their babies clean, dry and healthy. This growing problem puts more than 5.3 million children living in low-income families at risk for serious rash or infection when families dry and reuse diapers.
There is no federal safety net like WIC or SNAP for diapers. Families must rely on the generosity of non-profit diaper banks, among others. Yet there’s hope: For as long as nurses have been caring for babies they have been collecting and giving diapers to families in need.
