Bean and rice tortilla chip maker Beanfields Snacks has achieved its certification as a B Corporation.
The family-owned company joins Ben and Jerry’s, Etsy, Patagonia and hundreds of others companies worldwide using the power of business to tackle social and environmental problems.
Not to be confused with benefit corporations — which is a type of corporate structure — B Corporations earn the certification by meeting rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, legally expanding their corporate responsibilities to include consideration of stakeholder interests and build collective voice through the power of the unifying B Corporation brand. B Corporation performance standards are comprehensive, measuring a company’s impact on its employees, suppliers, community and the environment.
As of February 2013, there are more than 700 Certified B Corporations from over 60 industries and 24 countries, representing a diverse multibillion dollar marketplace.
"The 'B' stands for benefit," said Reed Glidden, Beanfields’ Founder and CEO. "B Corps inspire businesses to compete, not only to be the best in the world, but to be the best for the world."
Beanfields says it is on a mission to combine social responsibility, good nutrition and award-winning taste.
“All our Bean and Rice Chips are Non-GMO project verified, gluten-free, vegan and food-allergy friendly,” said Roy Glidden, the company’s co-founder and vice president.
The company says its new packaging and a major presence in New York metro stores are helping to increase its popularity and customer base. Beanfields chips can already be found in premium grocery stores in 22 Western states, soon to be available across the Northeast, Midwest and Southeast.
The State of Delaware recently signed benefit corporation legislation into law, which indicates the business world is gradually acknowledging the important of creating long-term sustainable value as part of their core structure.
