The recently formed Pet Industry Sustainability Coalition (PISC) has launched Version I of the Pet Industry Sustainability Toolkit, which was developed as an evolving roadmap for pet companies interested in reducing the environmental and social impacts of their products.

The Toolkit integrates existing sustainability tools already in the market place, including the Energy Portfolio by Energy Star and the Higg Index by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition and the Outdoor Industry Association.

PISC says the formation of close-knit relationships with its members will ensure that the Toolkit constantly reflects the needs of the industry by developing practical tools to address those sustainability concerns at the forefront.

The Toolkit was released during a webinar attended by several leading pet industry brands such as Petco and smaller ones such as new Silver Member, Molly Mutt. Led by Executive Director Caitlyn Bolton, the Toolkit Launch Webinar reviewed the Coalition’s three-part approach to advance sustainability through sharing knowledge, tools, and resources across the industry.

PISC says it strives to be the leading organization for sustainable advancement in the pet industry by promoting creative collaboration throughout the industry that prioritizes business-minded solutions for environmental improvement. The organization emphasizes collaboration to accelerate sustainability in the pet industry by encouraging the implementation of best practices, providing tools and resources for advancement and promoting continual and authentic improvement for the benefit of our environment, communities and businesses.

In related news, Sheba Entrées For Cats announced earlier this year that by the end of 2013, all of its U.S. recipes will include only responsibly sourced fish — even adding sustainable salmon to the menu. The action came as part of a 2010 commitment made by Sheba’s parent company, Mars Petcare, to use only sustainably sourced fish by 2020. Mars agreed to begin sourcing fish from 100 percent sustainable wild catch and aquaculture stocks and making use of sustainable alternatives to marine fish ingredients.
